Liverpool still keen on young Polish striker

We reported back in December that Liverpool had started to show very keen interest in Borussia Dortmund striker, Robert Lewandowski. It appears that despite no move being made for the player in the January window, Liverpool are still keeping a close watch on the player with a view to trying to sign him in the summer.

Lewandowski is a Polish international who has spent most of his early career in Poland, but it was following his move to Dortmund in 2010 that he became the focus of many club scouts across Europe after some sparkling performances that saw him score a hatful of goals.

Whilst his appearances since 2010 have been reduced, he still knows where the goal is and is able to find the net with regularity. This is certainly something that Liverpool need badly as they have found scoring goals quite tricky this season, netting only 28 times in the Premier League, less than Norwich, Fulham and even relegation bound Blackburn Rovers.

Liverpool’s great successes of the past have always happened when they had a clear target man, a prolific striker who could score huge amounts of goals with ease every season. Their search for a such a striker in recent years has seen them bring in several below par attackers who have simply failed to deliver when it counts and they have had to rely on players in other positions chipping in with goals to make up for the lack of goals from their strikers.

Lewandowski is a young striker who knows how to score freely in a tough league. I am not suggesting he would immediately become Liverpool’s saviour, but to my mind he is the type of young player who can be brought in to do a job and who can only grow and mature under the wing of a manager like Kenny Dalglish.

Reports yesterday suggest that Lewandowski has no intention of leaving Dortmund and in many ways I can understand why; he has a long contract and is the striker at the current champions of Germany. However, Liverpool is a club that is famous the world over and the Premier League is definitely an attractive proposition for any young player, so if Liverpool keep showing an interest maybe Lewandowski’s head can be turned and we may yet see him playing Premier League football next season.
